1 Day Gorilla Trekking Itinerary

The 1 day gorilla tracking Rwanda safari is an early morning departure safari with about 3 hours’ drive from Kigali city to Volcanoes National Park in Musanza. Arriving at the Kinigi park headquarters at 6:30 am where registration and briefing is done. Gorilla tracking being the main activity and after the briefing from the park rangers. You head to the forest for the gorilla tracking experience.

However Volcanoes National Park lies in the north of the country along the borders of Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla  Park and the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Virunga National Park. The park is approximately 100km from Kigali City and therefore just 3 hours away from the airport. With an estimated 900 gorillas roaming the Virunga massif of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda, in the mountains of Muhavura, Mgahinga and Sabinyo. This specie of gorilla was first discovered and described by Germany explorer captain Robert von Beringe in 1902. From the estimated 900 half of them are found in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. And Mgahinga Gorilla National Park of Uganda the other half shared by Rwanda and Congo.

Kinigi Park headquarters is where briefing and distribution to the gorilla group family takes place. There are specifically  10 gorilla family groups habituated for tourism in the volcanoes national park. After the briefing with water not less than 2 liters, packed lunch, rain gear, sun lotion, bud spray, gloves, hiking boots, long pants and long sleeved shirts. We start our trekking experience that will either be short or long depending on how far the primates will have gone. Mostly it ranges from 4-6 hours, with an extra hour spent with the gorillas in the jungle.
